Bee Observer

Through my MeetUp newsletter I randomly stumbled upon the Rhein-Main local chapter of Correlaid, a non-profit organisation that is supporting other NPOs in data science and digital projects. For my thesis project I joined the on-going collaboration with the University of Bremen on the project Bee Observer (BOB). Through sensors in beehives this project aims at helping beekeepers in their regular activities and create a large dataset for bee research.

Beekeepers face the situation that the health state of honey bee colonies is inherently difficult to observe without stressing the bees by opening the hive. We address this problem by proposing an approach that relies on a sensor setup to gather multisensory data inside the bee colony and focus on the detection of outliers in the data stream as indicators of critical situations during the colony’s development.
